The PDF file contains embedded JavaScript that exploits CVE-2009-0927 via the Collab.getIcon method. This JavaScript is designed to download and execute a secondary payload, as indicated by ClamAV detections of Js.Exploit.Shellcode-18 on both the original PDF and an extracted JavaScript artifact. The exploit leverages a known vulnerability in older versions of Adobe Reader.
Heuristics 9
-
Collab.getIcon — CVE-2009-0927 critical CVE exact CVE_2009_0927PDF JavaScript calls Collab.getIcon — CVE-2009-0927 is a stack buffer overflow in Adobe Reader triggered by Collab.getIcon() with a crafted argument. Allows arbitrary code execution. (identified after JavaScript deobfuscation)
-
ClamAV: Js.Exploit.Shellcode-18 critical CLAMAV_DETECTIONClamAV detected this file as malware: Js.Exploit.Shellcode-18
-
ClamAV detection on extracted artifact critical EXTRACTED_FILE_CLAMAVClamAV flagged at least one file extracted from inside this sample. Even when the wrapping document carries no AV detection of its own, a hit on the carved artifact is a strong indicator the sample is a delivery vehicle.
-
RichMedia (Flash) high PDF_RICHMEDIAPDF contains /RichMedia (Adobe Flash) which is a historic exploit vector
-
JavaScript action low PDF_JAVASCRIPTPDF contains a /JavaScript action. Generic JavaScript is common in benign forms; specific dangerous APIs are scored by separate rules.
-
Embedded JS stream low PDF_JSPDF references a /JS stream. Generic JavaScript is common in benign forms; specific dangerous APIs are scored by separate rules.
-
Embedded file low PDF_EMBEDDEDPDF embeds a file attachment — could carry an executable or another weaponised document as a nested payload
-
XFA form low PDF_XFAPDF uses XML Forms Architecture — can contain script logic
-
Embedded URL info EMBEDDED_URLOne or more URLs were extracted from the document. The URL itself is not a detection — see the per-URL labels for which channel (macro, JS, link annotation, document body, ...) reached each URL.URL http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#
