The sample is a malicious Excel file containing VBA macros, identified by ClamAV as Emotet. The Workbook_Open macro is triggered upon opening, which uses Wscript.Shell to execute a batch file. This batch file, in turn, constructs and executes a PowerShell command that downloads and executes a second-stage payload from multiple URLs. The reconstructed PowerShell command is: 'hell -e ' and the URLs are: 'http://youlanda.org/eln-image/n8DPZISf/', 'http://roservideob.net/eln-image/EjdcOMlY8Gy/', 'http://vbaint.com/eln-image/H2pPGte8XzENc/', 'https://framemaker.us/eln-image/U5W2IGE9m8i9hr/', 'http://niplaw.com/asoLidoundatio', 'http://robertflolod.us/eln-image/DGI2YOkwc9XPO/', 'http://mpmcomputing.com/fonts/JO5/', 'http://robertflolod.us/cegi/3f/', 'http://vocoptions.net/cegi/ifM9R5ylbVpM8hfr/'. Additionally, it drops two files, 'c:\programdata\tjspowj.vbs' and 'c:\programdata\uidpjewl.bat'.

  • CreateObject call high OLE_VBA_CREATEOBJ
    CreateObject call
  • VBA p-code auto-exec with execution tokens high OLE_VBA_PCODE_AUTOEXEC_EXEC
Compiled VBA/cache stream contains an auto-execution token together with shell/download/object-execution tokens. This catches p-code-only or source-extraction-failure macro documents where visible source is unavailable.
  • Suspicious extracted artifact high EXTRACTED_FILE_STATIC_TRIAGE
One or more files extracted from inside this sample matched static suspicious-content checks such as script obfuscation, encoded payload blobs, packed data, or execution/download terms.
  • VBA macros detected medium OLE_VBA_MACROS
    Document contains VBA macro code
