The sample contains a Workbook_Open macro that uses CreateObject to execute a series of commands. The macro reconstructs a URL from concatenated strings: "http://midnighsilverbcraft.com/store/wBjNOUw/B110N4cA6R3/", "http://temp.com/NAT_05_22_2009/BI710N4cA6R3/", and "https://redington.karmart". It then proceeds to download and execute a VBScript from one of these URLs, saving it as 'oue4hjld.vbs' in 'c:\programdata\'. The script also creates a batch file named 'bhnasleil.bat' in the same directory. The ClamAV detection name 'Doc.Downloader.EmotetRed02220-9938909-0' strongly suggests an Emotet family attribution.

Heuristics 6

  • ClamAV: Doc.Downloader.EmotetRed02220-9938909-0 critical CLAMAV_DETECTION
ClamAV detected this file as malware: Doc.Downloader.EmotetRed02220-9938909-0
  • Workbook_Open macro high OLE_VBA_WBOPEN
    Workbook_Open macro
  • CreateObject call high OLE_VBA_CREATEOBJ
    CreateObject call
  • VBA p-code auto-exec with execution tokens high OLE_VBA_PCODE_AUTOEXEC_EXEC
Compiled VBA/cache stream contains an auto-execution token together with shell/download/object-execution tokens. This catches p-code-only or source-extraction-failure macro documents where visible source is unavailable.
  • Suspicious extracted artifact high EXTRACTED_FILE_STATIC_TRIAGE
One or more files extracted from inside this sample matched static suspicious-content checks such as script obfuscation, encoded payload blobs, packed data, or execution/download terms.
  • VBA macros detected medium OLE_VBA_MACROS
    Document contains VBA macro code
